Potassium polyacrylate
Potassium polyacrylate (K-PAM, CAS 25608-12-2)
Is a water-soluble polymer, appearing as a white or pale yellow powder. It is readily soluble in water and widely used in drilling fluids, agricultural and forestry water conservation, and water treatment.
Key Information:
CAS No.: 25608-12-2
Synonyms: Potassium polyacrylate salt, potassium 2-acrylate homopolymer, K-PAM
Appearance: White or pale yellow free-flowing powder
Density: Approximately 0.4 g/mL (25 ℃)
Solubility: Easily soluble in water, insoluble in organic solvents
Key Properties: Strong inhibition, reduced water loss, thickening/shear dilution, anti-collapse, salt resistance (some grades)
Main Application Scenarios:
1. Oilfield Drilling (Core)
Used as a drilling fluid anti-collapse agent/coating agent/filtration reducer to inhibit shale hydration and expansion, stabilize the wellbore, and improve flow patterns; suitable for freshwater/saltwater slurries, vertical/horizontal/deep wells. Reference Standard: SY/T 5946-2002. Recommended dosage: Freshwater slurry 0.05%–0.1%, saline slurry 0.2%–0.7%.
2. Agriculture, Forestry, and Horticulture
As a super absorbent and water-retaining agent, it improves soil structure, reduces transpiration, and increases seedling emergence rate and drought resistance; it can be used in combination with cellulose, starch, and minerals.
3. Water Treatment
Used as a flocculant/filter aid to remove suspended solids in water and improve sedimentation and filtration effects; also used for sludge dewatering and industrial wastewater purification. 4. Building Materials and Mortars: Added to cement-based materials (grouting materials, repair mortars, floor mortars) to improve early strength, wear resistance, crack resistance, and impermeability.
5. Other Industries: Reinforcing fillers for rubber/plastics/coatings; increasing the density of ceramics/abrasives; oilfield cementing; water-absorbing resins for hygiene products, etc.
